This month’s Athlete of the Month is senior Abby Nicholson. Abby is a shot put and discus thrower. Abby is also continuing her throwing career at Eastern Illinois University. She plans to pursue her career in becoming a home economics teacher. Abby is not only a thrower, but she is also a cheerleader. Before each track meet, Abby eats hotdogs, but not just any hotdog, cheese hotdogs. Abby’s favorite Gatorade flavor is orange. The Bolt asked Abby who her biggest supporter is and she said, “My biggest supporters would definitely be my family and coach Herb Wilkins! My family supports me in everything I do and always makes sure I have everything I need to do my best. They come to all my meets and cheer me on and never fail to let me know how proud they are of me. And my coach Herb is a volunteer coach who spends his whole winter and spring training me and making me the best I can be. He devotes so much time and puts in so much effort to give me everything I need. I definitely wouldn’t be anywhere near the thrower I am today without him!” Also, just this past weekend at the Charleston Indoor Invitational, Abby threw her personal best of 41′ 7 1/4″ in the shot put, which is also the new school record. Abby has a bright future ahead of her, and all of her hard work has paid off.
